Why Google’s New Algorithm Outperforms BERT in 2021

Have you ever heard of SMITH algorithm by Google? Experts from Search Engine Journal reveal that this new algorithm is better and more efficient than Google’s previous algorithm BERT. A new paper has been published by none other than Google related to SMITH algorithm.

The top reason for that above-mentioned claim is that Google’s BERT has not been known for its outstanding long queries and documents. This new algorithm aims to words and sentences understand longer documents better.

This article will discuss why Google is using SMITH now and how it is going to outperform the previous algorithm.

Is Goolge Implementing BERT Yet?

The burning question for SEO community these days is that whether Google is using BERT or not anymore with the advent of its new algorithm. Google has not yet announced that it has discontinued the use of BERT algorithm. This statement is purely speculative right now to state whether Google is using the algorithm.

So what is SMITH Algorithm? Let us see first.

SMITH Algorithm

The new algorithm is called smith that is a framework for understanding and reading new documents.  Models such as BERT are trained to understand words within the context of sentences. In a simplified manner, the SMITH model is a more intelligent one that is able to understand passages and complex texts within whole documents.

In a simplified description, the SMITH model is a bit different than BERT. While BERT algorithm is a good one to perform on data sets to predict hidden words, SMITH does a better job than BERT to predict the next block of a sentence.

This kind of training is essential to understand larger documents better than BERT. However, some researchers who have studied BERT said that it surely has some weaknesses. For example, in the perspective of matching the search text, BERT has been doing a great job over the past few years for Google users. The algorithm is still limited to short text like a few sentences or one paragraph. This limits its possibility to read the larger documents effectively. Therefore, it is unsuitable for large form documents.

That is the main reason why researchers claim that the new SMITH algorithm outperforms BERT due to its ability to read long form documents more efficiently. There are several explanations of the above claim such as:

  • Understanding of semantic relationships between texts is vital for an algorithm if both texts are long form. That also involves pattern matching capabilities for long fragments of text.
  • Longer documents also contain internal structure like sections, sentences, and passages. For human readers, the structure of the document plays a crucial role in understanding the content. Moreover, the model also needs to take the structure of the information presented in the document for enhancing the performance of matching process.
  • As soon as the long form texts are processed, some practical issues arise like GPU memory lack.

Larger Input Text

According to Search Engine Journal, BERT algorithm was only good when it came to the length of the documents. The longer the documents, Smith can perform better in the long run. What actually makes SMITH model more robust is its ability to do something that BERT cannot do?

That does not mean that the model or framework of Smith can totally replace BERT and makes it unusable. The SMITH model can work in collaboration with BERT and facilitates it.

Long to Long Word Matching

The problem of matching the long content with long queries has been solved by the new algorithm. The algorithm is properly trained on a data set. The engineers have done a good job to hide random words and it is the job of the algorithm to predict such words. The chances of making mistakes are also less by the new algorithm. The SMITH is also pre-trained to perfectly guess those blocks of sentences. That feature makes it better than BERT and the best from Google yet.

Is Google Using SMITH yet?

As we mentioned before that the arrival or development of SMITH does not imply that Google has stopped the use of BERT completely. The researchers have studied the related research papers to analyze SMITH and compared it to BERT. Google also does not particularly reveal that it is using SMITH instead of BERT. Therefore, nothing is sure at the moment.
